Our church began its inception as a Sunday School in a three-room house on Parker Street in Jackson, Mississippi with the aid and support of Ms. Charity Lewis and Mrs. Kitty Gaines.
A few years later, a small group of eager Christians, under the leadership of the Reverend Wade Hamilton obtained a frame building on a 50 x200 plot, and organized themselves into a church family. The year was 1907, and it was then that New Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church became a reality.
Since its beginning, New Mount Zion has undergone a long succession of significant experiences. The congregation was involved in and supported the Movement of the Civil Rights Era. As a result, this Church is listed with the City of Jackson Civil Rights Tour - Site •45.
We are grateful to all former pastors, Interim pastors and administrator for contributing to our spiritual growth and development:
From 1907 to 1915, the Reverends Wade Hamilton. J. L. Calhoun and Judge Hayes served as pastors.
From 1915 to 1919, the Reverend Ben Monroe served as pastor.
From 1919 to 1924, the Reverend Dan Thomas served as pastor.
From 1924 to 1929, the Reverend Dan McCoy led us, and it was under his prayerful administration that plans were made to move and build a larger church at the corner of Parker and Maple Streets. The structure was completed in
1927 and Reverend McCoy served as pastor until his death in 1929. The Reverend G.J. Williams served an Interim pastor for the remainder of that year.
From 1930-1937 the Reverend J. J. Overstreet was pastor.
From 1937-1942 the Reverend J. C. Matthew was pastor.
From 1942-1947 the Reverend J.H. Robinson wan pastor. During his administration payments on the church were completed. His resignation became effective during the early part of 1947.
From that time until August 1947 Reverend J. C. Matthews served as Supply pastor.
From 1947-1952, the Reverend H.L. Davis was pastor.
From 1953-1968 the 'Rushing Era' was in effect Reverend It B.D. Rushing was well known for his dynamic personality and great preaching, and his wife Clementine, was also an especially gifted singer and helpmeet. Under Reverend Rushing's leadership the present edifice was built and completed in 1968, and the present fellowship Hall bears the name of his beloved wife. Following the untimely death of Reverend Rushing in December 1968-and upon the strong recommendations of Mr. James 0. Harrion, the Chairman of the Joint Deacon/Trustee Board, and Mrs. Hattie Penry, the President of the Women's Missionary Society--the Reverend Leon Bell was called and elected to become Our New Pastor.
Before his passing, Rev. Dr. Leon Bell served from 1968-2016 as our leader and shepherd. Under his able administration, the church liquidated its indebtness which was celebrated at a 'Mortgage Burning" Ceremony in December 1977. The church is involved in many ministries that were established under his administration, and the congregation felt especially blessed by his pastorship. Dr. Bell held the following degrees: Master of Science, Bachelor of Theology, and Doctor of Divinity. Additionally, he has received numerous prestigious awards including -the Outstanding Person of the 20th Century" -International Biographical Center in Cambridge, England.
On April 15, 2018, Reverend Willie Tobias, Jr. was installed as Pastor . He continues to do the work of the Lord and uplift the name of Jesus.
We the members of New Mt. Zion M.B. Church thank God for His love and protection during this 100+ year journey. We praise Him for bringing us thus far, and because of who he is, we entrust Him to lead and guide us through our future endeavors.
